Free Learning

We offer self-paced, flexible and individually mentored professional development for educators, tackling a range of themes pertinent to international schooling.

If professional development is to be helpful, it should be tailored to the needs and interests of individual educators. With this in mind, we are developing a series of ‘free learning’ units of professional development, whereby you can work at your own pace, in your own time, guided by a mentor, choosing from a range of themes pertinent to international schooling.

Free Learning, a novel approach to delivering curriculum, was originally developed by Ross Parker, current Director of Technology and Assessment at International College Hong Kong (ICHK). Ross describes the approach as follows: “Free Learning offers students the opportunity to chart their own learning through a varied map of challenges and experiences. It is fun, engaging and highly motivating, promoting both individuality and teamwork. Free Learning offers an extensive menu of learning experiences from which students can select to match their interests and ambitions (ICHK, 2019, n.p.). Free Learning at ICHK was the focus of a case study that was awarded the International Baccalaureate Jeff Thompson Research Award and later implemented at the Education University of Hong Kong.
